Makeup is the act of altering and developing an actor's body, suitable for the role he's playing.  This implies that Makeup helps in identifying the age, class and social status of a particular Actor.

FUNCTIONS OF MAKEUP...

Makeup conveys the actor's personality,age and religious beliefs

Makeup helps the actor get into the character he portrays

Makeup conveys the hidden meaning in a theatrical production

COSTUMES...

costumes are the clothing or any garment an actor or a contestant wears to highlight his status and make the performance colourful.  Costumes Justine makeup helps the actor get into character.
NOTE: makeup and costume must work hand in hand.  This implies that the Costumer and the Makeup artist must work together so as to depict a realistic performance.  
   
ORIGIN OF MAKEUP AND COSTUMES
   Costumes originated long ago when Eve ate the forbidding Fruit and discover she was not in clothing.... While makeup originated as early as our traditional African Festivals where men apply native chalks on their faces to depict supernatural beings (gods) .
  So one can not talk about Makeup and costumes without looking at the Biblical history of Adam and EVE and our Traditional African Festivals.
